Halou, a trio out of San Francisco, made their debut in 1998 with the album We Only Love You. As the album title suggests, this band is ready to wrap its musical arms around anyone who gives them a chance. Released by the Washington, DC-based label Bedazzled, the disc presents ten sophisticated songs. They are all heavily programmed with beats, but they fall far from sounding mechanical and removed. Rather, a warm, seductive feeling permeates them, largely due to the vocals of Rebecca Coseboom. The group's blend of electronic drums, keyboards, and ethereal female vocals translates well to comparisons with that of fellow artists such as Lamb, Cocteau Twins, Lush, Lords of Acid, Splashdown, and even St. Etienne's remixes. Upon first listen, this album may seem a tad homogenous, especially since most of the pieces are at the same tempo. Though it quickly becomes obvious which cuts will stay in your head. "Halfbreath", the first song, is downright angelic, with Rebecca Coseboom pleading to be loved and accepted. A few tracks later, on "Ifish", a stronger, sultrier feeling becomes more present in the music. This alternation is pretty typical of Halou's personality. Overall, We Only Love You presents a very pleasant and satisfying listening experience.
